Traveling theatre group to hold free performance of ‘Every Brilliant Thing’ at JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - A play to be performed at James Madison University on Tuesday hopes to inspire conversations on topics like depression and suicide.

In partnership with Sentara, the Norfolk-based Virginia Stage Company will perform the one-man play “Every Brilliant Thing” at 5:30 p.m. in the Hall of Presidents on the third floor of D-Hall as part of its traveling tour.

According to the VSC website, “the story blends comedy, improv, and audience interaction to tell one individual’s story of growing up in the shadow of their mother’s struggle with suicidal depression.” Throughout the show, audience members will follow the main character throughout their lives as they make a list of “every brilliant thing” that makes life worth living. Director of Enrichment Jordan Setzer said the character also involves the audience in the performance by breaking the fourth wall and speaking to them, sometimes directly.

Setzer said she has seen firsthand the impact the show has had on audience members.

“Being able to find those coping mechanisms with each other, within ourselves, and within our community, and establishing that community around us to lift us up when we’re having those emotions,” Setzer said. “I think that this piece is such a conduit to connecting individuals with mental health resources, suicide prevention and intervention resources, but also building community.”
