Learn from Mr. Wormwood and Mrs. Phelps at Virginia Stage Company and Governor’s School for the Arts Summer Theatre Camp!
Over the past two weeks, audiences have been entranced by the magic of Matilda The Musical. Kids and adults alike piled into the Wells Theatre to see the collaboration between the Governor’s School of the Arts and Virginia Stage Company for a record-breaking run.
Did the music of Matilda inspire your child? Did your teen catch the theatre bug, dancing in their seat and wondering how Matilda moved the chalk with her eyes? Keep the magic going with another collaboration between theatrical powerhouses GSA and VSC with Summer Theatre Camp!
At camp, your kid, aged 6-17, can learn theatrical skills from none other than Mrs. Phelps and Harry Wormwood! Teaching artists Laura Agudelo and Ryan Clemens (and others) will explore Aesop’s fables, Greek Myths, and Grimm’s fairy tales with summer camp kids!
According to Agudelo, “Mrs. Phelps has truly enjoyed reading all the books in her library over the last two weeks of Matilda the Musical. She and Matilda have especially loved reading all the Greek Mythology stories and Aesop's Fables, and have shared some fun and imaginative ideas for this summer's theatre camp at VSC. The run of Matilda the Musical may be coming to an end but the fun of camp is just beginning."
Although Mr. Wormwood is a conniving and book-hating car salesman, there’s no one better to teach classic stories to campers than actor Ryan Clemens! “Summer camps are great fun and a great opportunity for kids to collaborate on a creative endeavor,” says the teaching artist, who does not hate kids or books in real life. “We work together to envision, explore, write, rehearse, and perform a theatrical presentation. Just as our young performers in Matilda have learned, campers will invest in ensemble work and the principle of supporting fellow performers.”
